Moving to Jersey: housing and practical next steps
Start with housing eligibility, then compare homes, living costs and the arrangements your household needs. This is a planning checklist, not a personal legal, tax or immigration assessment.
Check your status before choosing a home
Jersey classifies domestic property as Qualified or Registered. Neither label by itself establishes your right to buy, rent or occupy a particular home. Those are separate questions governed by your Control of Housing and Work (CHW) status and any conditions. Registered property is not an unrestricted route for anyone to buy.
The Government's current guidance includes Permanent Entitled, Entitled, Entitled for Work Only, Licensed, Licensed for Lease Only and Standard statuses. Use its housing guidance by status and residential and employment status guide. Confirm the status actually granted to you; do not assume it from time on the island, a job title or an estate-agent label.
Build a realistic shortlist
- Ask the agent to confirm the property's category and any occupancy or purchase restrictions in writing.
- Compare asking prices and rents separately. Allow for transaction costs, deposits, moving expenses and ongoing bills.
- Check the original advert for availability, tenure, included services, parking and any conditions.
- Arrange local legal advice before committing to a purchase.

Plan the rest of the move
Use official guidance for tax residence, health registration and education. Check your household's circumstances directly instead of treating a general guide as an entitlement decision.
